The Princess of Wales arrives at Westminster Abbey for the annual event.

Catherine, Princess of Wales, is presiding over her annual festive musical service at Westminster Abbey, with a congregation comprising royals, celebrities and local heroes who have helped their communities.

The sizable congregation will hear a selection of traditional hymns, orchestral pieces, and literary excerpts from performers including Kate Winslet and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Focusing on Compassion and Love

The theme of the concert, held in the atmospheric historic church on Friday afternoon, is generosity and expressing affection towards one's neighbour.

In the audience are a couple named the Cordiners, whose young girl was lost to a brain cancer, and who established a foundation, a support fund, to help households where there is a youngster facing a life-limiting condition.

"Your efforts, love, and understanding, often without fanfare or recognition, and without any expectation or recognition, make an extraordinary difference to the lives of others," the Princess expressed in a letter ahead of the concert.

A Steady Comeback

The Princess of Wales is continuing her own gradual return to public life after her cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy, in November making her major oration since 2023, in which she reflected on recognising the "discreet, frequently unseen labour of caregivers".

Musical Talent and Access

Attendees entering the Abbey will enjoy performances from budding artists supported by the charitable trust Future Talent, co-founded by the former royal to broaden opportunities for instrumental training.

Carys Wood, aged 18, who is a trumpet player and is from Wales, has been helped by the trust, with grants helping towards equipment, teaching, and travel fees - and she said it was "incredible" to be taking part in the concert.

"Musical pursuits are frequently pricey," Carys said. She is now a student at the prestigious music academy, and added that "each individual ought to be given the possibility" to hone their artistic talents.

Generations Gathering

Her younger sibling Eliza, aged 11, who is a euphonium player, will also be at the Abbey. "I never imagined I would perform in front of so many distinguished guests," she said.

Attending the service will be individuals spanning multiple eras.

That will include nine-year-old Saphia Turner, recipient of a prize for youthful altruism, who creates and sells art and completes fundraising tasks to collect donations for food banks.

Seasonal Ambiance and Entertainment

The Abbey has been decorated with custom-created holiday decorations, with TV cook Mary Berry and florist Simon Lycett helping to make them.

Among the musical performers will be singer Katie Melua, the Abbey's own choir and a maritime folk band from Cornwall, the group Fisherman's Friends, who said the chance to take part was "the icing on the cake for us."

This annual carol service will be televised and shown on television on December 24th.
