Much like Storm Claudia swept through the northwest the night before, City overwhelmed United away at the Etihad Stadium. It was a convincing three goal triumph for Andrée Jeglertz’s side thanks to goals from Knaak, Shaw and Hemp. It was a display that firmly established their leadership claims as they consolidated their standing at the WSL pinnacle.

Successive Setbacks for Manchester United

This scoreline signalled consecutive league defeats for the United manager's side for the maiden instance since May 2024, placing them a significant margin off the top team with their title hopes in serious doubt.

Manchester United's ability to juggle league and continental soccer with a limited roster has been a widely debated subject since they secured entry to the UCL. Looking at the schedule, it always appeared this was the matchday that would seriously challenge this capability. Unfortunately for the away side, they seemed tired throughout, the memorable win against the French side clearly having left its mark.

Lineup Adjustments

The United manager had tried to rotate the squad with a handful of changes. Toone, Elisabeth Terland, Janssen and Leah Galton all added vigor, although the dropping of the on-form Malard to the substitutes raised a few eyebrows.

Manchester City, in contrast, have fewer fitness issues. Andrée Jeglertz made one adjustment from last week’s win over Everton with Lauren Hemp making her first start since healing from a fitness issue.

Commanding Opening Period

The trouble started to build for Skinner and his team from the first whistle. This was a show of the quality from Manchester City whose dynamic offense played with and tore United open with a sublime initial 45 minutes performance that saw them put three past the keeper in under half an hour.

Triple Strike

They turned chances into goals with almost the first period played when Fujino won the home team a set-piece. A cross to the far post was nodded across goal by Shaw for Knaak to nod home. It was City’s seventh header of the term.
